Your Kazakhstan itinerary

Day 1

Fly to Aktau, Kazakhstan.

Welcome to Aktau, your gateway to the surreal landscapes of Mangystau. Today is designed for a relaxed arrival, giving you time to recover from your journey and adjust to the rhythm of western Kazakhstan. After check-in at your selected hotel you’ll have time to unwind or explore the nearby Caspian waterfront. In the evening, we gather for an in-depth briefing on the days ahead, covering safety, timing, and photo goals. This is also a great moment to meet your fellow travelers and get inspired for the adventure. Night: Renaissance by Solo, Aktau.

Day 2

Valley of Balls & Lion Mountain

We depart early from Aktau, venturing into the geological heart of Mangystau. Our first stop is Torysh, the fabled Valley of Balls, where thousands of spherical rock formations are scattered across a windswept plain—an otherworldly landscape that begs to be photographed. We’ll spend the morning here, walking among the stones and capturing the shifting light. From there, we continue toward the majestic Sherkala, or “Lion Mountain”, a towering formation whose shape recalls a sleeping giant. En route, we pause at little-known viewpoints, dramatic cliffs, and hidden canyons that offer unexpected compositions. By late afternoon, we reach our yurt camp, nestled between Sherkala and the sculpted ridges of Airakty Shomanay. After settling in, we’ll enjoy a traditional Kazakh dinner beneath the stars. As golden hour fades into twilight, we head out for a short scouting walk to preview tomorrow’s sunrise location—an ideal way to close our first full day in the wild.

Night: Tented Camp

Day 3

Twin Giants of Mangystau

Today offers a deep dive into two of Mangystau’s most iconic landscapes: Sherkala and Airakty Shomanay. We begin before dawn with a sunrise shoot at one of the two locations, selected based on weather and light conditions. As the golden hour unfolds, dramatic cliffs, sculpted ridges, and fortress-like formations come alive in shifting shadows—ideal for wide-angle landscapes and minimalist details. After returning to our yurt camp, we enjoy a hearty breakfast and take time to rest, download images, or review photography techniques. In the late afternoon, we set out again to the second site, capturing its changing light and atmosphere as sunset paints the desert in warm tones. These formations transform throughout the day, offering fresh perspectives and inspiration with every return. After dinner, if the skies are clear, we’ll head out for an optional astro photography session, taking advantage of Mangystau’s dark skies to frame stars, silhouettes, and glowing rock forms.

Day 4

Tuzbair Dreams: Light, Shadow, and Stars

We begin the day with a final sunrise shoot at either Sherkala or Airakty, giving you one last opportunity to capture these dramatic formations bathed in golden light. After breakfast, we break camp and set off westward toward the surreal landscapes of Tuzbair. The journey takes us through remote, untouched terrain—shifting from rocky escarpments to stark chalky plains. By afternoon, we arrive at our luxury camp, ideally situated on the edge of the dazzling Tuzbair Salt Marsh. After settling in, we explore the salt flats and surrounding cliffs, scouting unique compositions where glowing white surfaces meet steep pale walls. As sunset approaches, we position ourselves to capture high-contrast images as deepening shadows and warm hues transform the landscape. After dinner, and if skies are clear, we’ll offer an optional astro photography session, using the marsh’s reflective surfaces to mirror starlight—a truly ethereal setting for night landscapes and long exposures.

Night: Tented Camp

Day 5

A Day on the Edge of Earth

Today is devoted entirely to exploring the surreal beauty of the Tuzbair region, one of Central Asia’s most visually captivating and otherworldly landscapes. We begin with a sunrise session, photographing the first light as it sweeps across salt-encrusted flats and gleaming chalk cliffs, revealing a palette of whites, grays, and soft pastels. Throughout the day, the shifting light and textures create endless possibilities—from grand, wide-angle vistas to intimate, minimalist frames. Between photo outings, there’s time to relax at camp, edit your images, or join a guided walk through hidden valleys and ravines nearby. These less-traveled paths offer fresh perspectives and compositions often missed. As golden hour returns, we ascend to elevated viewpoints to capture the warm glow stretching across the flat salt pan and the sheer faces of the cliffs. After dinner, we gather beneath the stars once more for astro photography, closing the day with deep creative satisfaction.

Night: Tented Camp

Day 6

Boszhira Beckons: A Journey West

After a tranquil morning and optional sunrise shoot over Tuzbair’s reflective plains, we enjoy breakfast and begin our journey to one of Mangystau’s most iconic landscapes: the Boszhira Valley. The route takes us through vast desert plateaus, winding limestone canyons, and remote geological wonders. We pause for a scenic picnic lunch, with opportunities to photograph along the way. By afternoon, we arrive at our luxury camp near Kyzel Kup, perfectly situated for quick access to Boszhira’s most stunning viewpoints. As golden hour approaches, we set out to a nearby ridge for an epic sunset shoot. Here, Boszhira’s surreal formations—razor-sharp cliffs, deep amphitheaters, and pyramid-like peaks—glow in shifting tones of gold and rose. The dramatic skies and sculpted terrain provide endless creative possibilities. After a warm dinner back at camp, we review plans for tomorrow’s sunrise, preparing for one of the tour’s most visually striking days in the heart of the desert.

Night: Tented Camp

Day 7

From Dawn to Dusk in Boszhira

We rise early for a sunrise mission in the heart of Boszhira, where the first rays of light graze the valley’s iconic “fang” formations, casting dramatic shadows across the alien landscape. This is one of Mangystau’s photographic highlights, and we’ll take our time exploring multiple vantage points throughout the morning. After a short break and lunch, we continue our journey to the nearby and enigmatic Mount Bokty, a flat-topped, layered mountain whose sharp lines and unique shape offer excellent opportunities for creative composition. Later in the day, we return to Kyzel Kup and climb one of the surrounding ridgelines to capture golden-hour light sweeping over Boszhira’s jagged cliffs, soft dunes, and vast desert floor. The shifting light and dramatic skies make this a day to elevate your portfolio. If conditions allow, we offer an optional night shoot, where the stark formations under starlight become a playground for astro and silhouette photography.

The drive offers one more opportunity for spontaneous photo stops, whether it’s a new angle on a familiar site or unexpected wildlife sightings. By late afternoon or early evening, we arrive back in Aktau and check into our hotel.
