Your Kazakhstan itinerary

Day 1

Fly to Almaty, Kazakhstan.

Your photographic adventure begins with a flight to Almaty, gateway to the Kazakh Altai. Upon arrival, our team will greet you and transfer you to your hotel. If you arrive early or need help arranging extra nights, the Infinite Horizons office is happy to assist with accommodations and logistics.

Day 2

Almaty city tour

Your journey begins in Almaty, where modern energy meets Kazakhstan’s cultural roots. We explore the vibrant Green Bazaar, a bustling market dating back to 1875. Colorful stalls brim with fresh nuts, fruits, spices, and local delicacies, offering perfect photo opportunities and cultural immersion. Across the street, we visit the stunning Ascension Cathedral, a wooden architectural masterpiece completed in 1907. Despite its delicate appearance, it survived the devastating 1911 earthquake with almost no damage and still stands proudly in a peaceful city park. In the evening, we dive into Kazakhstan’s culinary heritage with a traditional dinner at the acclaimed Sandyq restaurant. Here, you’ll enjoy dishes like beshbarmak and baursak, served in a warm, atmospheric setting that reflects the country’s rich nomadic history. This immersive day sets the tone for the adventure to come.
Night: Mercure Hotel, Almaty.

Day 3

Fly to Altai

After a hearty breakfast, we head to Almaty Airport for our afternoon flight to Ust-Kamenogorsk with Air Astana, Kazakhstan’s award-winning national airline. The short flight takes us deep into the eastern reaches of the country, where vast steppes meet forested mountain ranges. Upon arrival in Ust-Kamenogorsk, we check into our hotel and take time to settle in. The rest of the day offers a relaxed introduction to the town. A casual walk through the center allows us to stretch our legs and get a feel for this quiet city on the Irtysh River, known for its Soviet architecture and proximity to wild landscapes. In the evening, we gather for an introductory meeting to discuss the journey ahead, review logistics, and get to know one another. This is where our Altai expedition truly begins—setting the tone for the unforgettable encounters, breathtaking scenery, and powerful images that await in the days to come.
Night: Dedeman Hotel, Ust-Kamenogorsk.

Day 4-5

In the life of an Eagle Hunter!

Over the next two days, we gain a rare and intimate perspective into the ancient bond between a Kazakh Eagle Hunter and his Golden Eagle—a tradition passed down through generations from father to son. We are welcomed into the home of a seasoned berkutchi, where we witness firsthand the deep respect and connection between hunter, bird, and land. Our visit also includes the cherished tradition of Konak Asy, the nomadic Kazakh custom of honoring every guest with heartfelt hospitality. In the vast and often harsh steppes, sharing warmth, food, and stories is a sacred ritual. We’re invited to a lavish table set with traditional dishes such as chak chak, kurdak, and other regional favorites. As we feast, our host raises toasts to health, friendship, and safe travels, turning the meal into a celebration of human connection. This experience not only nourishes the body but also offers a lasting impression of Kazakh generosity and tradition.
Night: Dedeman Hotel, Ust-Kamenogorsk.

Day 6-7

Tradition in Motion: The Eagle Festival

As the much-anticipated festival begins, we set off on a scenic journey to the competition grounds, nestled in the snowy Kazakh steppes. The eagle hunting contest is a breathtaking display of skill and tradition, divided into three main events: speed, agility, and accuracy. Hunters arrive in full ceremonial dress, mounted on decorated horses, launching their Golden Eagles with specially crafted leather gloves. The soaring birds, the pounding hooves, and the haunting sounds of the dombra—Kazakhstan’s national instrument—create an unforgettable sensory experience. Traditional yurts dot the festival grounds, offering warmth, comfort, and an abundance of local food. With our VIP access, we’re welcomed into these cozy interiors, where we enjoy the region’s rich nomadic hospitality. Outside, young falconers display their budding skills with Common Kestrels, while the majestic Saker Falcons occasionally join the spectacle. Over two vibrant days, we capture thousands of unique photographs. Each evening, we return to our comfortable hotel in Ust-Kamenogorsk, full of impressions and stories.
Night: Dedeman Hotel, Ust-Kamenogorsk.

Day 8

Closing the Circle with the Berkutchi

As the festival draws to a close, we make one final, heartfelt visit to our esteemed berkutchi host. Whether or not he claimed the top prize, we come to offer our gratitude, congratulations, and respect for his dedication to preserving this remarkable tradition. This visit offers a final opportunity to capture powerful portraits and intimate moments that reflect the spirit of Kazakhstan’s eagle hunters. It’s a fitting conclusion to an extraordinary journey—one filled with action, connection, and culture. We’ve witnessed ancient skills brought vividly to life, shared meals in traditional yurts, and experienced the warmth of true Kazakh hospitality. Our memory cards are full, but so are our hearts. As we depart from Ust-Kamenogorsk and begin our journey home, we carry with us far more than images—we carry stories, friendships, and a deeper understanding of a timeless way of life. This final day marks not just an end, but a lasting beginning in our photographic journey.
Night: Dedeman Hotel, Ust-Kamenogorsk.

Day 9-10

Portraits of Heritage in Autumn Light

Our final photography sessions unfold in the golden fields outside Oskemen, where Kazakh heritage is brought to life through two unforgettable days of portraiture and cultural storytelling. Dressed in richly detailed traditional garments, Kazakh couples and Batyr warriors (Kazakh heroes) pose against sweeping autumn backdrops, embodying both strength and grace. These sessions offer the chance to capture dramatic portraits, emotional moments, and powerful reenactments of historic warrior rituals. We focus on both individual and paired storytelling—romantic gestures, ceremonial attire, and proud warrior stances—highlighting the deep ties between identity, land, and legacy. With golden light pouring across the open steppe, each frame becomes a timeless tribute to Kazakhstan’s living history. As the sun sets on our final day, we reflect on a journey rich in culture, connection, and unforgettable photographic encounters—an expedition that goes beyond the lens to celebrate the enduring spirit of the Kazakh people.
Night: Dedeman Hotel, Ust-Kamenogorsk.

We begin the day at a relaxed pace, allowing time to rest or take part in an optional Adobe Lightroom session. For those interested, it’s a great opportunity to refine your post-processing skills, review highlights from the expedition, and learn editing techniques to bring your images to life. Later, we transfer to the airport for our return flight to Almaty, nestled against the scenic backdrop of the Tien Shan mountains. Depending on the flight schedule, there may be time to further explore Kazakhstan’s largest and greenest city. Whether it’s enjoying a stroll through one of Almaty’s leafy parks, visiting a local café, or simply soaking in the city’s relaxed rhythm, this final touch of urban culture offers a fitting contrast to our time on the steppe. As the day winds down, we reflect on the unforgettable journey behind us—one that blended culture, nature, and tradition into a deeply personal photographic experience.
