Machiel Valkenburg is the visionary behind Infinite Horizons. Originally from the Netherlands, his deep-rooted passion for travel led him to Central Asia, where he has been based since 2007. It’s here that he found not only his calling, but also his family—he now lives in Almaty with his wife, a proud Kazakh, and their two children, Dion (born in 2018) and Leily (born in 2023). Along the way, Machiel has also spent time living in Spain, Malaysia, and Indonesia, enriching his perspective and deepening his global connections.

From his cozy office in the heart of Almaty, Machiel manages the day-to-day operations of Infinite Horizons. He is also the founder of Rubythroat Birding Tours, the largest and most respected ecotourism company in Central Asia, renowned for its expert-led wildlife and birding expeditions.

With over 20 years of international tour-leading experience, Machiel is recognized as the most seasoned and knowledgeable guide in the region. Though his role today is more behind the scenes, he occasionally steps into the field to personally lead select tours—bringing with him a depth of knowledge, a calm presence, and a contagious passion for nature. Among Machiel’s most cherished memories are his expeditions to Greenland, East Africa, and Mongolia—each offering unforgettable encounters with nature at its wildest and most awe-inspiring.
